The Story of SUNGOD

The origin story of SUNGOD—why we started the brand, our engineering-first ethos, and how we’re rethinking alcohol for modern, active lives.

SUNGOD didn’t start as a brand idea. It started as a frustration. Long days in the sun, on boats, in the mountains, or moving between work and life—every option felt wrong. Beer was heavy. Seltzers were artificial and bloating. Cocktails were too much, too fast. And the so-called “premium” options were the same liquids with better labels. We weren’t looking to drink more. We wanted to drink better, without paying for it the next day.

The breaking point came during a ten-day sailing trip through the islands of Croatia. Drinking was part of the experience, but nothing worked from morning through evening. Nothing was sessionable. Cocktails too early meant you were asleep before dinner. Light beer in the hot sun meant bubbles all day and bloating all night. And nobody in our crew had time to feel foggy or slow, because we were jumping on and off the boat to scuba dive, ride mopeds, hike, and explore.

That trip made one thing obvious: the alcohol industry wasn’t designed for how active people actually live and work today.

Our CEO comes from an engineering background—ten-plus years at Tesla—and is thoroughly rooted in first-principles thinking. When something doesn’t work, you don’t decorate it. You strip it down. That mindset led us to a basic question: what part of alcohol actually matters?

The answer was ethanol. Everything else—impurities, additives, excess sugar, carbonation—was baggage. Research into alcohol metabolism and hangovers confirmed it: many of the worst next-day effects come from congeners, not from alcohol itself. That insight changed everything.

So instead of starting with a flavored spirit and masking it, we flipped the process. We started with the cleanest possible alcohol base and rebuilt the drink layer by layer: better water, real organic juice, no carbonation, nothing artificial, no shortcuts.

The first versions were made at home, late at night, out of pure frustration. And they were immediately different. People kept drinking them—not because they were strong or flashy, but because they felt clean, refreshing, and easy to return to.

From there, the ethos locked in. SUNGOD would not chase trends. We wouldn’t race to zero calories or hide behind vague wellness language. We would be honest about what’s inside the can, even when we didn’t have to be. That’s why we list our ingredients. That’s why we obsess over purity and sourcing. Not because it sounds good, but because accountability matters when you’re building something you drink yourself.

At its core, SUNGOD is about respect—for the body, for the next day, and for the customer. We believe alcohol can exist in a high-performance life if it’s designed with intention. This isn’t about excess or escape. It’s about presence. Enjoying the moment without borrowing too much from tomorrow.

That’s where SUNGOD comes from, and that’s why we’re building it the way we are. If you want the full engineering rationale, it’s all in the SUNGOD whitepaper.
