San Diego run clubs have gone from a handful of track people and a few store runs to a thing that fills the Pacific Beach boardwalk with 700 people on a Wednesday night. If you are trying to pick one, they are not interchangeable. Some are a social hour that happens to include 3 miles, some end at a brewery, a couple are real training groups with a coach and a Saturday long run, and one meets at a fountain in Balboa Park at 6:29am.

We have been to most of these, usually because somebody on the crew got talked into it, and this is how we would sort them for a friend who just moved here. One caution: these clubs post their schedules on Instagram or Strava and move their start spots often. The times here are current as of October 2026; check the account the morning you go.

The short version

  • New in town and want to meet people: Pacific Beach Run Club, Wednesday at 6pm. Go once, then decide if you want 700 people every week.
  • Smaller and friendlier: a Milestone Running store run, Monday in PB or Wednesday in North Park.
  • Near North Park: Seek Beer Run Club, Monday at 6pm, free beer at the finish.
  • North County: Encinitas Run Club from Culture Brewing, Tuesday at 6pm.
  • Training for a race: San Diego Track Club. Join now and do the Saturday long runs.
  • The morning people: November Project, Wednesday at 6:29am in Balboa Park.

The big social ones

Pacific Beach Run Club

Pacific Beach Run Club is the one everyone has heard of. Todd Barnet started it in 2020 with about 10 people after moving to town during the shutdown, and by summer 2026 Axios was reporting 600 to 700 runners on a Wednesday and nearly 25,000 followers. The whole group runs as one pack, with people along the sides keeping it together and 3 set stops where everyone waits for the back. That sounds slow and it is the reason it works at that size.

Barnet has said he wanted a club that was accessible and did not revolve around drinking, and there is a social at a PB business after each run.

  • When: Wednesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 8:30am for a social 5K, plus a 7am Saturday long run of 4 to 10 miles.
  • Start: currently a block off the boardwalk on Felspar Street. It has moved before; check @pbrunclub.
  • Cost: free.
  • Our take: the best first run club in the city if you are new and know nobody. It is a lot if you came to run.

Milestone Running

Milestone Running is the running store that has anchored the scene for years, and it hosts 2 free store runs a week. These are much smaller than the PB pack, a group of regulars who will learn your name by the third week, and the staff are the people to ask when your shoes are the problem.

  • Mondays at 6pm from the Pacific Beach shop on Garnet Avenue.
  • Wednesdays at 6pm from the North Park store on El Cajon Boulevard, which they call the Hump Day Run Club.
  • Distance: 3 to 5 miles, all paces.

The ones that end at a brewery

Seek Beer Run Club, North Park

Seek Beer Co on El Cajon Boulevard runs the Seek Beer Run Club every Monday at 6pm: an easy 5K or 10K that starts and ends at the taproom, with 1 free beer for every runner at the finish. Owner and brewer Dave Ohmer co-founded it and it has grown to well over 100 people on a good Monday. The club page says inexperienced runners and non-runners are encouraged, and the back of the 5K is people walking and talking.

For anyone between North Park and Golden Hill this is the easiest run club in the city to make a habit. The Bottle House on Grape Street in South Park and David’s Friendly Market on 32nd are both a few minutes away for the stop afterward.

Encinitas and Leucadia

Two brewery runs on the same road on the same night. We would go Encinitas for the route and Duck Foot for the smaller crowd.

  • Encinitas Run Club meets out front of Culture Brewing on the 101 on Tuesdays at 6pm, 3 to 5 miles along the coast, free, every pace. Their Strava also lists a Saturday 8am run from Necessity Coffee.
  • Leucadia Run Club starts and finishes at Duck Foot Brewing in Leucadia, also Tuesdays at 6pm, free, all levels.
  • The shop: Moonlight Wine and Spirits, 3 blocks north of Culture on the same highway, carries SunGod. It is the stop if the plan after the run is a fire ring at Moonlight rather than a second beer.

OB Run Club

OB Run Club meets Tuesdays at 6:04pm at 4700 Saratoga Avenue, and again Thursday mornings at 7, for 4 to 6 miles with a lot of it along Sunset Cliffs. In October the sun is going down while you are out there. Nobody is checking a watch, and the Thursday group ends at coffee. Follow @obrunclub for the week’s spot.

November Project

November Project is not a run club exactly. It is the free early morning workout group that started in Boston and has a San Diego chapter. The Wednesday session meets at the Bea Evenson Fountain in Balboa Park at 6:29am, with Mondays at rotating spots. Expect hills and stairs, and to be done before most of the city is awake.

Front Runners & Walkers San Diego

Front Runners & Walkers San Diego has been going since 1981, started as a way for LGBTQ+ people to meet somewhere other than a bar, and it is still the most reliably scheduled club in the county. Runners and walkers both, and they put on the San Diego Pride 5K.

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm from Sixth and Laurel on the west edge of Balboa Park.
  • Saturdays at 8am from Park Boulevard and Zoo Drive.

If you want to get faster

San Diego Track Club

San Diego Track Club is the old guard, a membership club with coaches, and the thing you join when you have a race on the calendar. The track has moved several times in recent years, so check the club site before you drive to Mira Mesa.

  • Tuesday 6pm track workout, in 2 places this season: the Metro group at Mira Mesa High and a North County group at Discovery Lake in San Marcos.
  • Half marathon program (they call it Rockin’ ā€˜n’ Runnin’), built on Saturday 7am long runs. The next session starts January 2, 2027.
  • Boston+ program starting November 14 this year.

Black Flag Running Club

Black Flag Running Club is the looser training option: 3 paid seasons a year with a plan, twice-weekly group runs and Saturday long runs. San Diego Magazine’s 2023 Best Of named it the club for long runs and bar crawls.

What happens after

Where a club ends is a bigger part of the decision than most people admit. Seek and Duck Foot end at their own bar, the PB pack goes to whichever PB business is hosting the social that week, and the North County and OB groups mostly end up at somebody’s patio or a fire ring at Moonlight once it gets dark early.

After 4 or 5 miles on a weeknight, with dinner still 2 hours off, a beer sits heavy and a carbonated can on an empty stomach feels worse. SunGod is a Hardwater: 5%, spring water, a neutral grain spirit and real organic juice, no carbonation. Minted Sol, cucumber, mint and lemon, is the one we open after a run. The longer version of why no bubbles matters is in the non-carbonated list and the low sugar options essay.

Where to stock up

How we would pick

  • New in town and want to meet people: PB on a Wednesday once, then decide whether you want that every week or whether Milestone on a Monday is more your speed.
  • Near North Park: Seek on Monday. Do not overthink it.
  • North County: Encinitas Run Club on Tuesday with the stop at Moonlight Wine and Spirits after. If the kids are along on the weekend, the brewery guide has the patios that work.
  • A half marathon in the spring: join the Track Club now and do the Saturday long runs. That is the part you will not do alone.

Questions people ask

Are San Diego run clubs free?
Most of the social ones are. Pacific Beach Run Club, both Milestone Running store runs, the Seek Beer run, OB Run Club, Encinitas Run Club, the Leucadia run at Duck Foot and November Project all cost nothing, you just show up. The clubs that charge are the training clubs, San Diego Track Club and Black Flag, where the money buys a coach and a program rather than a group to run with.
What is the biggest run club in San Diego?
Pacific Beach Run Club, and it is not close. Axios reported in July 2026 that the Wednesday night run draws 600 to 700 people in summer and the club has nearly 25,000 Instagram followers. The whole group runs the boardwalk as one pack with stops along the route so nobody gets dropped, which is the only way a group that size works.
Do you have to be fast to join a run club in San Diego?
No. The social clubs are built around the slowest person showing up again next week. PB Run Club stops at set points so the back catches up, the Seek Beer run says outright that non-runners are welcome, and Encinitas Run Club and the Milestone store runs both advertise all paces. If you want to be pushed, that is what the Tuesday track workouts at San Diego Track Club are for.
Which San Diego run club is best for a beginner?
The Saturday morning social 5K at Pacific Beach Run Club, or either of the Milestone Running store runs, which are three to five miles with a running store's staff around to answer the shoe question. The Monday run at Seek Beer Co has a 5K option and a beer at the end, which gets a lot of people to the second week.
Can you drink on the beach after a run in Pacific Beach?
No. San Diego banned alcohol on its city beaches, the boardwalk and the beach parking lots in 2008, and Pacific Beach is where it gets enforced, so the after-run drink happens at the bar or back at the house. Chips Liquor on Garnet and Crest Liquor on Ingraham are the two PB stops that carry SUNGOD if the house is the plan.
